The monumental fundraising efforts of two YHA volunteers, Pat and Brian McKenna, were recognised recently by the youth hostelling charity, YHA, in a plaque unveiling ceremony at the popular Wells next the Sea Youth Hostel.

Twenty-five years ago Pat and her husband, both keen youth hostellers, led the campaign to create a Youth Hostel in East Anglia as they felt strongly the region had so much to offer holiday makers.

Their dream became a reality when Wells next the Sea church hall was gifted to YHA. Over the next two years they were instrumental in raising £360,000 to refurbish the building and turn it into a Youth Hostel.

The 31 bed self-catering Wells next the Sea Youth Hostel is now one of YHA’s most popular locations with both holidaymakers and schools.

“We were thrilled to recognise the contribution that Pat and Brian have made to YHA and to hostels in Norfolk,” said YHA Head of Corporate Affairs, Duncan Simpson. “It was wonderful that more than 30 people travelled from all over the country to pay tribute to Pat and Brian.”

As part of their fundraising efforts Pat and Brian sent out 10,000 letters each one individually signed by Pat who is now retired and lives in Heartsease in Norwich. Sadly Brian died last year; however the day of the plaque unveiling at YHA Wells next the Sea was of special significance to Pat and her family as it was on the same date that Brian passed away.

Norfolk has two other Youth Hostels at nearby Sheringham and at Hunstanton.
