Hundreds of youngsters and local people pledged to improve their fitness at a special event at Hethersett Woodside Infant and Nursery School.
The Active Norfolk Pledge to Fitness Pod was in place from early morning as local residents and children pledged to achieve sport or health related goals in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The day was launched by Norfolk Olympiad Paul Evans who spoke to a morning assembly about the benefits of fitness.

He told youngsters about a career that saw him represent Great Britain in two Olympic games as well as coming third in a London Marathon, second in a New York marathon and first in a Chicago Marathon.

Paul told the assembly, which also included children from schools within the Hethersett Cluster, that his most treasured possession was a small and rather battered medal won when he was aged eight:

“It was the first medal I ever won and has a special place in my heart. The thing I am most proud of, however, is getting the best out of myself. Whatever you do in life if you can say that you got the best out of yourself and tried your hardest, that is all anybody can ask of you and if you work hard at something you will get better,” he said.

Children from the Hethersett cluster of schools, which includes Woodside, Hethersett Junior, Hethersett High, Cringleford Primary, Little Melton Primary, Mulbarton Infant and Mulbarton Junior Schools, made their pledges either individually or in groups to a special Olympic style video screen that placed them on a simulated Olympic velodrome.

Little Melton Primary School also performed a rap song with lyrics written by themselves.

Pledge 2012 is being run by Active Norfolk in partnership with Norfolk County Council and the National Health Service. Its aim is to get 2012 people in Norfolk to pledge to achieve a sport or health related goal by the Olympic opening ceremony on 27th July.

Woodside was the only school in the county to be invited to host a pledge event and in the afternoon parents and local residents were invited to join in the move towards fitness.
